All Security Guards will need to re-register with PSIRA in future and would need to show compliance with the new proposed PSIRA/SASSETA training standards?

PSIRA/SASSETA is saying this new regulation needs to be implemented as soon as the Minister signs it off.

Many security companies feel that this is just talk and might not be inforced at all. According to PSIRA and SASSETA they are going to do whatever it takes to not only enforce this new training standard, but also impose fines on any companies that allow unqualified guards on their premises as well as fine the guading company for non-compliance...!

For more information see the PSIRA website,

So Now What?

If approached incorrectly this process could cost you alot of time and a lot of money and a lot of hassle. If you attempt to be accredited with SASSETA that process alone could take you 6 - 18 months if not longer!

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) not?

It seems that some misconceptions exist with regards to what RPL is. The following will provide you with information of what RPL is not.

  1. RPL is not a "free bee" or short cut and is not a training course.
  2. RPL is not a process for example; submitting your curriculum vitae and Grade E certificate and expect to receive recognition for all nine unit standards as per PSIRA/SASSETA communiqué dated 2 June 2008.
  3. RPL is not a process of claiming that "I have 20 years of experience as a Security Officer" and is entitled to recognition for all the applicable unit standards. RPL is not a process of completing the summative assessments of the National Certificate: General Security Practices.
  4. RPL is not a "stand alone" process which is not integrated with existing initiatives.
  5. RPL is not a process where all the work is left to the RPL Candidate to develop his/her own Portfolio of Evidence.
  6. RPL must not be a paper intensive and time consuming process.
