TESTIMONIALS

What Our Trainees Had to Say

I would like to thank the South African security academy for their good service that I have received from them the range officers where good,at the shooting range they made me understand how to use the firearms and how to handle them. May you continue to do the good work I thank you.

Course: Tactical training Handgun.

I have attended tactical training with the TSASA Team during 2022. While I have experience in the handling and use of firearms, the training I undertook with TSASA took me to "the next level " in relation to education and skill. The level of patience by the instructors demonstrates the years of knowledge and field experience that is shared with their students. I have enrolled with TSASA for more training. The instructors and personnel at TSASA are very friendly, helpful and professional. I have referred at least four colleagues for various trainings and each of them were impressed with the quality of training, the ease with which training is delivered at a level that anyone at any level is able to comprehend and apply. Above all else, the good old fashioned values of morals, ethics and integrity through hard work are applied consistently. I will recommend TSASA's training to anyone who is seeking knowledge, value for money and quality any time.

Course: Rampage & Gun Craft 1 Rating

I just want to radiant the joy and satisfaction I get when I think of TSASA institute. In the past week TSASA instructors constructed an insane sport shooting stage call "rampage".... Iyooooo ......I did bad the first go because the stage is insane however upon reverse stage shoot...I excellent answer surpasses my time and all opponents expect 1 but it's cool......I'm happy with the trainers competence level, friendliness and equally assertive in implementing safety rules all the times... Me, I have synchronized their yearly calander events to my calender....I don't want to miss another insane shoot.....Shot till finger hurt...so until all empty...no one leaves with live range amo... I love it. TSASA institute I salute you.

Course: Handle and use of a handgun | shotgun | self-loading Rifle & Carbine | manually operated rifle & carbine

Certificate of competency (Handgun handle & use) (Target orientation proficiency course)

I can recommend anyone to do training at TSASA Especially ladies. As they let you feel comfortable, and not stressed out. And I will keep on improving my skills with.

Zelda Van Zyl

Course: 4 Gun Course

That was the Hand Gun, Rifle, Carbine and Shotgun. I have to say the experience was great, the course material was easy to understand, but studying is a must. Further to this, Renier our Class Instructor was thorough in the way he explained the theory and it made more sense once we did the practical training. The practicals would require a fair amount of concentration, but once the first shot is fired, the rest is history. I would highly recommend TSASA to anyone, whether you a beginner or veteran that has been carrying a firearm for over 25 years, overall great experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a Firearm license?

The process of attaining a FIREARM license in SA consists of 2 phases, COMPLIANCE TRAINING and APPLICATION.

Compliance Training:

  • You will be required to complete training modules called Unit Standards.
  • Completing each unit standard is required to receive clearance to apply for that particular Firearm competency.
  • You only need to complete the training for each individual module once.
  • Once you successfully pass the training you will receive a set of training certificates that you must keep and provide copies of to SAPS.
  • You may complete any of these units in a combo that will save money and time.
  • If you complete multiple units together, you will only have to do your Competency Application once, as you may apply for all the firearms you have completed training of at the same time.
  • SAQA – 117705: Demonstrate Knowledge of Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000) is critical and the learner cannot complete any further units until this unit has been passed.
  • SAQA – 119649: Handle and Use of a Handgun
  • SAQA – 119650: Handle and Use of a Self-loading Rifle or Carbine
  • SAQA – 119651: Handle and Use of a Manually Operated Rifle or Carbine
  • SAQA – 119652: Handle and Use of a Shotgun
  • You will need to complete the above applicable units, relevant to the firearm you wish to apply for Competency and License for.
  • SAQA – 123511: Handle and Use of a Self-loading rifle or carbine for business purpose
  • SAQA – 123514: Handle and Use of a Shotgun for business purposes
  • SAQA – 123515: Handle and Use of a Handgun for business purposes
  • SAQA – 123519: Handle and Use of a Man. operated Rifle / Carbine for bus. purposes
  • You will need to complete each of the above units after completing the previous applicable private units if you want to work as an Armed Security Officer.
  • *Only if you lose your training certificates and the training centre where you originally trained has closed down, you will have to redo the training with a new training provider.

Application Process:
After completing your training and received your Training Certificate and Statement of Results, you will need to go to your local SA police department and start the application process.

First you will need to apply for your Firearm Competency. A competency is related to you as the firearm holder. For a Competency SAPS checks that you are a South African Citizen or have permanent residency, you have no criminal record and that you have completed your training at a reputable training centre and is accredited with the PFTC and SASSETA.

Your Competency Application will consist of the following:

  • SAPS 517 Affidavit (Attained from your Sector Police Station).
  • 3x Friend / Family Affidavit (Attained from your Sector Police Station).
  • 3x ID Copies.
  • Copies of Certificates and Statement of Results.
  • Proof of Residence.
  • Proof of Permanent Resident Certificate.
  • Copy of Any Previous Competency Certificates.
  • 2x Colour Passport Photos.
  • Cash Amount Per Application.

Once you have all the above documents ready you can go to your local SAPS DFO (Dedicated Firearms Officer) who will assist you with the rest of the process and take your finger prints. Once you have paid the application fee, you will receive a Receipt and then a Series of SMS’s that will guide you through the process as you wait for your Competency Card.

*In the event of there being a problem with your application you will be notified via SMS or your DFO will contact you, so you may review and attempt to rectify the issue before resubmitting your application.

Once you have received your competency, you may then apply for your Firearm License. This process will require that you have already purchased your firearm and have a very thorough motivation, that explains why you should be approved to have a license for the applicable firearm.

You will need to follow this process for every firearm you wish to have licensed.

Your Firearm Application will need to consist of the following:

  • SAPS 271 Affidavit (Attained from your Sector Police Station).
  • Copy Of Competency Certificate.
  • 3x ID Copies.
  • Copies Of Certificates And Statement Of Results.
  • Proof Of Residence.
  • 2x Colour Passport Photos.
  • Colour Photos Of your Gun Safe, Inside (Bolted To The Wall) And Outside(Keys In The Door Of The Safe).
  • Manufacturing Details Of The Firearm Safe.
  • Proof Of Purchase Of The Firearm.
  • Proof Of Storage At Gun Shop Where Firearm Was Purchased Or Kept Safe For The Estate.
  • Letter Or Appointment Of The Executor, If Inherited.
  • Colour Photos Of The Firearm Detailing Any Marking Or Wording On The Weapon.
  • Gunsmith Report On The Firearm In Question. (Make, Model & Caliber)
  • Proof Of Any Other Firearm Licenses Or Copy Of Licenses Being Renewed.
  • Cash Amount Per Application.

Once you have all the above mentioned documents ready, you will again have to go to your local DFO to submit and have finger prints taken again. Once you have paid the application fee, you will receive a Receipt and then a Series of SMS’s that will guide you through the process as you wait for your License Card.

*In the event of there being a problem with your application you will be notified via SMS or your DFO will contact you so you may review and attempt to rectify the issue before resubmitting your application.

Once you have received a notification that your License is approved, you do have the option to ask your DFO to issue you with a License Certificate. This will allow you to collect your firearm from the Gun Shop. This Certificate works like a temporary license until your license card is issued. Once you receive your license card you must return the Certificate to your DFO.

Be aware that your license as well as your competency, will expire 5 years after they are issued under section 13, and must be renewed by following a very similar process as mentioned above. However, the Police Affidavit's are different, and must be collected form your DFO.

Please call us on 076 890 6683 if you need any assistance in the Application Process.

Can I complete the Firearm training in one day?

YES. If you follow the online training process that can be found on the Firearms Training page, you can complete all of the theory work at home and only attend the class when you are ready to attempt the assessments. After you pass the Assessments your certificates will be issued in a few days

What is the Difference between Competency and License?

A competency is related to you as the firearm holder. For a Competency SAPS checks that you are a South African Citizen or have permanent residency, you have no criminal record and that you have completed your training at a reputable training centre and is accredited with the PFTC and SASSETA.

A Firearm License is for each of the firearms you own, which means for every firearm you wish to own you must apply for a license for that firearm.

How long does the Competency and Licensing Take?

After you have successfully submitted your application the process will take a minimum of 6 weeks for the competency to be approved, you will still have to wait to receive the printed Competency Card, this can take a few more weeks.

After receiving your competency, you will be able to submit your application for your firearm license which again will take a minimum of 6 weeks for the license to be approved, you may then apply for the license permit from your DFO.

Is there a way to speed up the process?

Unfortunately, not. The process is set out by the South African Police Services and the Central Firearms Registry (CFR). Once your application is submitted you can track the progress via the 'Where's My App' application on your smart phone. This app is available on the App Store.
