Training is broken into 4 STEPS:

This must be done with a PFTC and SAPS accredited training institution, where you will receive a TRAINING Certificate stating that you have completed the requirements and the institution finds you Competent to handle a firearm.
You will also get a PFCT Statement of results that certifies that your training was done with an accredited and up to date institution.
Training takes between 8 and 10 hours to complete due to the amount of PREPARATION work that is required for this reason TSASA prefers to do the Courses over Two days

REGISTRATION PREPERTION PRACTICAL and EXAM classes are done over 2 Saturday mornings at Die Blou Meul Shooting Range from 09h00 – 11h00.
The first class the Learners are provided with the manuals after making payment, followed by a safety and law lecture, the learners then depart and entered the preparation phase at home.
The ‘Second’ Saturday after the PREPERATION has been completed at home the students are taken into the Range 1 at a time by an instructor for the PRACTICAL and taught the basics of the handle and use of Firearms.
When the weeks new students are done all week 2 students enter the class to start the EXAMINATION.
This includes Tuesday evening and Wednesday Learners (who didn’t manage to finish that Wednesday).

TSASA is cleared for distance Learning. Which means learners may study the course materials at home and come to the available classes to write the exams when ready.
COURIER: TSASA will COURIER the basic manuals to a paying customer after a deposit of at least 50% of the course fee. When the learner is ready they will need to travel to one of the TSASA branches to write all of the EXAMS, certificates will also be couriered at the customers expense if not collected.
E learning: eLearning will follow the same steps apart from the need to COURIER the manuals, ones the Learner is ready they will need to travel to a branch to complete the EXAMs and receive there certificates via mail or collection. Learner that do not complete the Exams in person will not be registered with PSIRA.

APPICATION is broken into 2 STEPS:
– POLICE Clearance or POLICE COMPETENCY, which certifies the person as fit to own a firearm under the firearms control act and only needs to be done once per fire arm type and MUST be renewed every 5 years regardless of the state of your firearm license.
– LICENSE to possess the firearm in question.

Police Competency is for you, which means you are found competent by SAPS to possess a Firearm, there are 4 types of Firearms and you need a competency for each one to be able to apply for the license.
Firearm License is for each of the Firearms you own, which means for every firearm you wish to own you must apply for a license for that firearm.
